How to Use The Free Nokia PC Suite To Transfer Graphics To Your Nokia

Nokia phones let you download graphics or Nokia logos and some sites charge for this, but one of the best kept secrets is that you can do it yourself using free Nokia software. This article explains how to do this.

Difficulty Level: Hard Time Required: 15 minutes

Here's How:
  1. Not all Nokia cell phones have a free PC Suite software, but most North-American models sold after the year 2000 do. So you'll have to make sure your phone is in the download list provided below in ordor to use this how-to guide.
  2. Download the appropriate Nokia PC Suite software from this list at Nokia and install it according to Nokia's instructions.
  3. If you have a laptop computer, it probably has infrared connectivity. If so, it may be already activated or you may need to check your computer's BIOS settings (see user manual) to activate infrared.
  4. If you don't have infrared connectivity, you'll have to buy a serial data cable for your Nokia. One way to do so is to compare prices using that feature.
  5. Once the Nokia PC Suite is installed, start the "Nokia PC Graphics" part of the Nokia PC Suite.
  6. If you are using infrared, press "menu" on your Nokia phone and go to "Infrared". It should report "IR reception activated". If you are using a cable, just connect it to your phone and PC.
  7. Now, find a graphic on the web and save it to your computer following the method described here.
  8. Open it from the Nokia PC graphics software (you may need to select .BMP in the open file dialog window's file type line).
  9. View it and verify that it looks ok. If necessary, adjust the brightness and contrast using the slide besides the thumbnail image in the lower right corner.
  10. Save the image using the "Save As" option of the file menu. In the "Save as type" line, select "Group Logo Files".
  11. From the File menu, select "Update to phone". If the option is grayed out, you probably did something wrong. Try the following troubleshooting options below:
  12. TROUBLESHOOTING: Check the connection. If you are on infrared, make sure Windows displays an active infrared icon on the taskbar. Try restarting the connection (step 6)
  13. TROUBLESHOOTING: The software may not be recognizing your graphic as a Group Logo, try exiting the software and restarting it, then use the "open" function of the "File" menu to open the group logo that you saved in step 10.
  14. Once the graphic is updated to your phone, you will be offered to assign it to a caller group, such as Friends or VIP.
  15. The last step is to associate your contacts in your phone book to one of these caller groups so that the logo is displayed when they call. Consult your owner's manual for details.
